I don't wear heels very often because there aren't many occasions for it. When I do it's block heels which hurt my feet less and even then 4 hours and you've had enough. As someone who walks a lot, these days you'd have to pay me to wear a stiletto heel.
Thus my feminine shoe of choice has become the ballerina flat with the rest of the time spent in sneakers, boots and the odd sandal. Daily living tends to encourage practicality and comfort and after a while you end up dressing much like other women who want to blend function with a bit of style. Hence aside from my height which is increasingly less noteworthy these days, my sartorial choices don't have me stand out in public at all. This journey is almost entirely one of the mind and can be so slow that we hardly notice the change until we look back to the starting point. Some of us who are older resisted until the road only led to one possible place which then turned out to be far less scary than we had first imagined.
