I love the use of the term "disease model" to describe what people like Ray Blanchard, James Cantor and others have tried to push for many years. Rather than see transgender people as a naturally occurring variant of the human mosaic, they see them as a cancer cell which is infecting other healthy cells.
In fact, the entire premise of the gender critical movement is that there is an invasive disease which must be stopped rather than simply allowing for accommodation. Never mind that the inclination for gender diversity is naturally occurring and, much like left-handeness increased sharply once people stopped being castigated for it, we are seeing the same dynamic with gender diverse people.Besides the Blanchard work, we have also seen theories like "rapid onset gender dysphoria" which consisted of developing a hypothesis by simply talking to disapproving parents of transgender teens and young adults. Clearly the premise from the start was to discredit rather than perform an honest study.
Viewing gender diversity as disease has made sense for those with conservative mindsets who have incredible difficulty with cultural change. The fear response then encourages the development of theories which explain it as aberrant pathology.
Are some people erring in being swept up with this cultural change? Yes and some of these detransitioners are all over YouTube explaining their stories. But this is a price always paid when we loosen cultural taboos in that some people will not perform sufficient due diligence before making significant life decisions. But then people err much more frequently when deciding to have plastic surgery which is far more prevalent.
