"Our true selves"

When I read the phrase "our true selves" I ask myself what philosophically that is supposed to mean but I am presuming that it refers primarily to authenticity.

For gender variant people that objective might involve needing to medically transition while for others it could mean expressing themselves without regard for societal constraints which are two different responses. Neither of them is the wrong one.

Some, given the freedom to transition, wouldn't necessarily take it but would that mean they weren't being sufficiently true to themselves?

I would argue that the phrase "our true selves" should stand primarily for respecting one's core without fear and regard for what a fickle public thinks.
