I have noticed that some older gender variant people make a huge production number out of interacting with the public which only serves to add nervousness and anxiety for no good reason. The best approach is to downplay it and pretend you aren't even presenting differently.
Never mind what you wear. Focus primarily on being yourself which presumably your clothing doesn't change and it will greatly increase your field of view.
I am only too familiar with the exciting buildup of the outing particularly if they are few and far between because of life constraints. The result for me during those days was that they often ended up being less fulfilling due to excessive self-conciousness and over planning the details.
Yes, today I live differently but even towards the end of my previous way of living, I found much more pleasure in the spontaneity of surprise and relaxing into the moment with far less mental buildup.
Today you could be dressed like Napoleon Bonaparte on the bus and no one would care. The key is to make sure you are a very relaxed and confident Napoleon.
Remember that people only want to see you be genuine. So be that.
I can assure you that they can tell.
