Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius were the most known of the Stoic philosophers. Their mantra was about self-control, wisdom, balance and discipline and that harmony with nature and with oneself is important. Control of emotions using reason and understanding what we can and cannot control is a bedrock of their belief system.
What I like about stoicism is its embrace of discipline and balance and dampens emotional volatility. It encourages us to keep our boat steady and live with integrity, justice, temperance and wisdom.
This week a car veered into a crowd of Christmas marchers in Germany injuring at least 60 people. Presumably it is a sign of our more perturbed and volatile times where desperation does nothing but increase.
The world could use a little of their calm.
