The way I finally got my gender dysphoria in check was to unite my animas (as Jung might like to hear me say). Rather than have an exclusively male and exclusively female character running around, I fused myself into one being with a solid mixture of mostly feminine but some masculine traits and came out to people (well mostly came out :)).
We can get confused and think that our expression dictates identity. "I like to wear women's clothes ergo I am a woman" could be what we say to ourselves but then, lots of women don't like to wear "women's clothes" or makeup. They have a big range of expression within their ranks only that it has been traditionally larger than men's used to be which obviously has been changing.
Make no mistake; gender dysphoria is very real and, presuming you have it, demands an action plan which is unique for each person depending on its severity. This requires deep introspection to figure out.
However, when it comes to expression (including manner of dress) which was pretty much societally enforced, there were many people who viscerally rejected but nevertheless capitulated for the sake of conformity and escaping ridicule.
Society likes their sheep obedient except that more and more they are escaping the confines of the pen.
