We do not really matter

No one really cares about our opinion on anything which means utimately we do not matter to the general population. While that might sound harsh it is true. We are the ones who give ourselves self importance and create needless anxiety about being assessed and watched. But no one cares because they have their own problems and concerns.

We have value to those who love us and who we love in return. We also have value as citizens of the world who are hopefully trying to help others enrich their own lives even in small ways. Beyond that thinking we have more weight is simply hubris which does not serve us.

Yet freeing ourselves from our own bubbles of self importance should be beneficial to the psyche because we can stop worrying. For example, I ride the subway everyday with this knowledge and look around to see people self absorbed in thought or mired in their cell phones and relish the fact that I don't matter to them at that moment and because of that I am that much more unburdened. I can remove self critique as if it were coming from them and let go to be myself.
