Even if I am no longer religious, the "everything created itself" mantra of some academics makes just as little sense to me as the worst excess of orthodox faiths. The problem as I see it is that humans only see the universe and its glory through a limited lens of time and space. We are, to use a simplistic analogy, like mosquitoes trying to understand what makes humans tick.
What I defer to is the reality that we will never be able to fully comprehend everything through quantum mechanics or string theory. There is simply far too much complexity involved and clearly intelligence far beyond our own. So we are left with limited and primitive tools much like a toddler being taught advanced integrals in calculus. The mathenatician Pascal suggested that we believe in God as good statistical gamble and I tend to agree with this wager because the alternative makes far less sense to me.
