Viva doesn't pull punches. Jesus, a gay young man from Havana who cuts hair to survive wants to do drag but then his disgruntled and gruff ex boxer father returns into his life after decades of absence. The contrast could not be more stark and reconnecting and finding common ground between them won't be easy.
The poverty is real and the neighborhood is tough and unforgiving. This machista culture is not the best place to be LGBT. His father has made mistakes he regrets and he only knows one way to behave which is far from being to able to express feelings for his only son who didn't turn out the way he expected. This is a very good film which does not glorify or exaggerate anything. It simply shows in graphic detail how complex and textured our lives can be and how there is always, when we least expect it, some hope even in the darkness.
