I was talking with Aufilia who is 24 like my son is soon to be. She had just served me my coffee and we got into the subject of being a GenZ in a world so full of economic uncertainty. Her boyfriend had the same job as my daughter but, digital animation having fallen into a depression, he is working in a gym as a trainer until things hopefully return.
Whereas my generation was under the thumb of black and white dictates but at least had a path forward into career, hers has an uneasy uncertainty that has her admittedly sometimes envying mine. I on the other hand love their chill acceptance of each other and wished I had possessed that freedom of spirit to be who I have always been when I was their age.Aufilia is lovely and has an almost calm shyness about her which I think will benefit her in life. She listens to me attentively and respectfully as I tell her that life is a journey with many phases and invariable ups and downs. I tell her I am confident that this unsettled phase where the last of the boomers and older genXers begin to yield way, will eventually lead to a new normal; one which will benefit a greater percentage of people rather than just the fortunate few.
Too bad we don't always get to see what is ahead on our road so we can at least brace for the inevitable bumps.
