One psychological trick which can maybe be helpful is to think of ourselves as an original. Rather than find solace within a herd, we can imagine ourselves as a unique individual within the human mosaic. The reason this might be useful is that it avoids or at least simplifies the chore of self-labeling which can be exceedingly complex especially if one does not reside religiously within the confines of the binary but are still exploring core identity.
I always stress that psychology is the number one thing to look after and how one processes their divergence clearly falls within this realm. As society increasingly divulges its true diversity, it becomes important not to necessarily pigeon hole ourselves within a particular sub-grouping or label; unless of course we want to for comfort and support.
For me feeling free to be more objective as I discovered myself became increasingly important over time. Maybe thinking in a more expansive way will help you too.
Remember that a label does not replace or dictate an action plan.
