Gradations and exceptions

All of biology contains gradations and exceptions which necessarily includes human affairs. For example, even within the categories of Harry Benjamin he felt compelled to grade the severity of his most dysphoric patients with his creation of his groups 4 through 6.

However, the moment we try to categorize something we are often obliged to find exceptions to the rule because anything organic is messy by its very nature.

One of the reasons I have moved increasingly to only using the term gender variance is because it is the most impervious to being revised. Plus what we want is not to be herded into groups but instead to help people lead meaningful and authentic lives. Some of that will entail having more societal tolerance for what can sometimes amount to harmless gender bending (whether sexually tinged or not).

Even people with gender dysphoria can benefit from numerous approaches which need not be one size fits all. The consequence of thinking there is only one way is to do nothing and suffer because we can't have the perfect solution we think we need.
