By this age I have no illusions about the limits in cruelty or stupidity of humans but also of their amazing goodness. We seem to be endowed with a great expanse of free will which some say doesn't exist. Here I think of neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky and his insistence that it does not since so much of what governs our actions are decided by predispositions both genetic and imposed through socialization.
Still I don't entirely agree with the affable Sapolsky if no other reason that I still like certain illusions kept intact.
