My research into gender variance first began with personal angst about what to do regarding my own situation and then expanded to thinking about human behaviour which grates against convention in general. We can be extremely odd creatures and prone to idiosyncratic behaviour. The key to understanding the self is to determine which elements are optimizing or deterring mental health and wellness and deal with them to the best of our ability.
I have tended to split gender variant behaviour into no choice versus choice (ie.dysphoria vs not) while recognizing that these can blend within individuals. Motivations can differ and many have roots in early childhood. The brain chemistry and the socialization of each person is so unique as to be like the formation of a snowflake.
I now less favor getting mired in terminology and focus on how our divergences from societal norms can affect our mental health. How we can learn to recognize what actions are instrumental to improving it hinges on our detachment from outside opinion.
Here our ability to realize what was truthful and essential during our early education versus what was simply adherence to irrational societal norms becomes pivotal. Unfortunately this takes time if you were indoctrinated to fight instinct from a young age.
The ultimate aim? achieving authenticity without the need for secrecy while avoiding distress.
