In 1968 SNL veteran Molly Shannon's father had a car accident in which his youngest daughter and wife were killed. Molly who was also in the vehicle was only 4 years old at the time. He had been driving under the influence.
One doesn't ever get over that.
He was devastated and had pleaded that he not be the one to drive after a party during which he had a bit too much alcohol. But these were the days before MADD and we thought everything would be fine. It was also the era of optional seat belts.
Years later it came out that Molly's father had been gay all his life and used drinking as a coping mechanism. His daughter was heartbroken for him and had never blamed him for the accident. One day she confronted her father at his then age of 72 about his sexuality, the answer to the question of whether he was gay was:
"Most definitely"
Many people in the past lived lives of quiet desperation and did their best to exist within the boxes they were told to stay inside of.
They did their best.
