Jocelyne Robert has resigned from the order of Quebec sexologists rather than face obligatory re-training. At 77 years of age she says she is very trans-positive but disagrees with a movement that is sometimes too quick to affirm gender questioning especially among very young people.
I am also of the opinion that we need caution since I have seen this play out in my own family with a nephew and niece who ultimately turned out to be gay after initial bouts of gender exploration and doubts.
As a very trans-positive person myself for obvious reasons, I want people to make the right decisions for themselves having sufficiently reflected on their options which at a young age is very unlikely since impulse is the preferred method at that juncture of life.
If my generation hesitated and mulled things over sometimes for decades, today the opposite is more likely to happen.
Unfortunately, transphobes grab on to the idea of caution as negation of a legitimate identity which couldn't be further from the truth. The point is that there isn't only one unique path to an authenticity which can sometimes take time to discover.
