The big "what happened" analysis is still going on among the pundits. Trump won by less than 2% of the popular vote so it was less mandate and more people wanting something different than establishment corporatist politics which made them feel no better after 4 Biden years; this despite some decent attempts to improve things at home.
Trump's fake populism works on some but not on everyone. But the tree needs to be shaken somehow even if it introduces chaos into the fray. Sure, the tariffs are a horrendously stupid idea which he himself doesn't understand but that doesn't matter when much of the population doesn't seem to either.
Late stage capitalism has its effects and as things implode around them, everyone will feel the pinch even the wealthy who now need to worry about the restless peasants revolting.
