It doesn't matter

There are two schools of thought. One says that to be transgender you need to experience an incongruence with birth sex (dysphoria) while others say you don't.

It doesn't matter.

The reason I think that this is not a very relevant discussion is that the focus is put on a definition which can and has shifted over the decades. Thus you can use any definition you like for yourself, but it won't tell you what to do about your situation. Expanding an umbrella with the addition of terms to describe forms of gender variance, cannot and should not impact how you live your life.

Yes, there will always be circumstantial barriers (access to care, societal prejudice, family issues, etc)  which are present in every era but they have nothing to do with the language or descriptions we use for people, some of whom, have a very big challenge on their hands in terms of how to proceed.
