If I only base myself on comments on the Trump trade deals, a significant amount of people still don't understand how tariffs work but they are going to find out the hard way. Going from 1 to 2% in January to now 15% is going to hurt quite a bit as Americans import many things from the rest of the world.
The snake oil salesman told them he would lower their grocery bills but a short visit to Cosco or Walmart will break that illusion.
The democrats are at a low point in popularity which is also not surprising. Having adopted a corporatist philosophy in the late 80's and early 90's, they distanced themselves from working people who are understandably frustrated that they can't keep up. Many Obama voters became Trump voters after an intelligent but fundamentally Neoliberal president failed to deliver what they needed in dismantling some of the oligarchy.
Trump is a symptom of a bigger problem which was brewing for a long time and his second election is going to cost the average citizen very dearly. More broadly, the whole world will feel the sting of protectionist policies which ultimately benefit no one. You don't give a toddler the keys to the family car without consequences.
They say that things need to get a whole lot worse before they get better. So let's just brace ourselves for impact.
