The older we currently are, the more difficulty we will have existing somewhere between the gender binary. The reason is you grew up in a world that was so restrictive you can't imagine becoming some version which doesn't fit either side.
We aren't necessarily hopeless causes but the most pervasive and fundamental programming you received from birth was regarding your gender and that isn't something easily undone.
Small wonder that in the past people either hid their gender variance or transitioned in stealth.
Making things harder still is your place on the spectrum. If you are someone who is satisfied with birth sex and celebrating sporadic gender expression you should be fine. If you feel you must medically transition you also have a path you must follow.
Being somewhere between those poles introduces reticence about what to do which makes your early childhood formation mostly unhelpful when trying to find a new baseline.
Current youth have a much more plastic view of gender and its demands and are quicker to resist adopting a mask to get by in society; a mask which, if worn long enough, is very hard to remove.
