Democracies only work when political parties are prepared to lose. In other words, the principle of free and fair elections overrides the agenda and philosophy of each party.
In the US this is broken beyond repair.
You have a dogmatic GOP regime so hell bent to transform the country that it will lie and cheat to accomplish its goals. It is where the downfall will come.
I don't believe that this is now fixable which is why the death spiral is firmly in place and will end only when rock bottom has been hit.
When you see your opposition as a mortal enemy there is no way to allow them an inch and conceding points to them is akin to admitting you are wrong in your approach.
The GOP doesn't have an altruistic agenda but instead want to force US society in a direction which isn't helping the common greater good. To accomplish this you need to confuse and obfuscate to get your way through cultural turmoil which distracts because your platform is toxic. Thus, authoritarianism is the only way.
The only question which remains for me is not whether the empire crumbles but when it will happen such that a rebuild can begin in earnest.
