My next passport is something I have put some thought into. I have reflected on the photo plus I have imagined how I will travel through customs. This is far less complicated than it used to be but nevertheless transgender people are right to be cautious and maybe justified in feeling a bit stressed.
I won't be traveling to the US anytime soon but western Europe is not out of the realm of possibility and next year could be that opportunity.
Gender variant and transgender people travel every day all over the world so I won't be breaking any barriers but it is best to stick to countries which have been designated as very accepting according to the international agencies monitoring such things. Thankfully, my natal country of Spain is a firm green in that respect.
I have decided not to officially change my gender marker (although I reflected on this at length). Putting an X for gender is permitted in Canada but could be an issue at some port of entries. It would be great if gender was removed from passports altogether as I don't see its relevance when traveling.
I already look androgynous even when I try to present as male (thank you genetics) so that won't be an issue for the picture.
