Might some binary transsexuals have taken a different route to deal with their dysphoria if their decision were to be faced in today's environment?
I know that androphilic (man loving) transsexuals with high intensity dysphoria tended to be ideal candidates for medical transition but how about those more on the fence living in a very binary 1950's or 60's. Harry Benjamin developed his scale during a time where gender variance was strongly frowned upon. It is almost certain that were he alive today, his 6 typology measuring stick would look much different and would include genetic females to boot.
When you loosen the definition of man and woman you suddenly open up the terrain for a wider array of options. It's not to say that all of these older transsexual patients would have chosen differently only that perhaps some of them might have.
Harry Benjamin was correct to think in terms of a graded scale because today's society proves it. We see it every day.
